A teaching plan for a Reading Lesson
In Module 5, SBook I of NSE
By Liang Xia from Chengmai Middle School
Teaching aims:
☆Knowledge aims: Get the Ss to learn to use some useful Words and expressions related to science and experiments: iron, potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, aluminium, zinc, copper, react, reaction, substance, partial, oxide, steam, aim, apparatus, conclusion, Bunsen burner, test tube, cotton wool, fine emery paper, rust, boil, ordinary, balance, crucible, tongs, etc.
☆Ability aims: Develop the Ss’ skills of Reading and get them to learn how to make a plan of a simple scientific experiment
☆Emotional aims: To raise students’ interests in science and form the rigorous scientific attitude.
Teaching key and difficult points:
☆Key point: Develop the Ss’ skills of Reading some passages about simple scientific experiments.
☆Difficult point: Help the Ss to make a plan of a simple scientific experiment.
Teaching methods:
1. Task-based teaching approach
2. Audio-visual teaching approach
3. Communicative teaching approach
4. Genre-based teaching approach
Teaching aids:
The multi-media and other normal teaching tools
Teaching procedures:
Step 1 Pre-Reading
1. T: Recently, I have bought some lovely iron spoons and I like them very much. But I can’t use all of them at a time and some of them have rusted. Can you give me some advice on how to prevent them from rusting?
2. T: Thank you for your advice. But maybe you can give me better advice after you finish the Reading tasks in today’s lesson. Next, let’s review some metals before we start Reading.
Step 2 While-Reading
1. Skimming: T gets the Ss to read Passage A quickly and choose the best title for it and T helps the Ss to find out the sentences which gives the information about the title:
A. The Different Uses of Metals
B. The Reaction of Metals
C. The Reaction of Metals with Oxygen
2. Scanning: T gets the Ss to read the table in Passage A again and answer the following questions:
A. Does iron have a slow or fast reaction heated in oxygen? (fast)
B. How does iron react with water or steam? (partial reaction)
3. T: Do you always believe what you read?... If you are not sure about whether iron reacts with water or steam, what will you do?... Well, after we do an experiment, we are expected to write a description, that is to say, a report of it. Next, let’s read a description of a simple scientic experiment on iron, and find out the five stages of the description as quickly as possible:
Aim—apparatus—method—result—conclusion
4. Scanning: T gets the Ss to read Passage B and choose the best answers:
1) The cotton wool is pushed down the tube to ____C____.
A. keep the heat out B. keep the cold out
C. keep the air around the nails dry
D. keep the temperature unchanged
2). To prevent iron from rusting, we should put it ___A____.
A. in dry air B. in water with a little air
C. in ordinary water D. in the open air
3). What is the use of oil? (A)
A. To keep air out of the water.
B. To prevent iron from rusting.
C. To make the tube smooth.
D. To burn the tube.
5. Get the Ss to complete the following summary according to the passages they have read:
Metals react with different substances and the 1._________ is put in order. An experiment shows how 2. __________ reacts with air and water. The conclusion is iron 3. ___________ in ordinary water. ( reaction, iron, rusts)
6. T: now that you have finished the Reading tasks, can you tell me how I should prevent my lovely iron spoons from rusting?.... You are so wonderful.
Step 3 Post-Reading
1. T: You have done a good job in Reading, but I wonder whether you can put what you have learnt into practice. Next, let’s make a plan of a simple scientific experiment. Before that, I think a video may give you some ideas. Watch it carefully. ( play a short video of a chemical experiment on magnesium)
2. Get the Ss to say what apparatus they may use in an experiment to find out if there is a change in weight when the metal magnesium burns in air, offering some possible apparatus for them to choose from.
3. Get the Ss to discuss in groups how they are planning to do the experiment with some useful Words and expressions shown on the screen.
4. T: If you do a scientific experiment, which steps should you follow?
A. Aim Apparatus Conclusion Method Result
B. Apparatus Aim Conclusion Result Method
C. Aim Apparatus Method Result Conclusion
D. Aim Method Apparatus Conclusion Result
Step 4 Homework
Get the Ss to work in groups to carry out the experiment with their chemistry teacher’s help, which they have planed in class, and write down a description of it, and report it to their classmates.
